Dordle: guess two words at once

Dordle is Wordle with a twist that doubles the pressure. Two hidden five-letter words are drawn at the same time, every guess you type is scored against both of them, and you get seven tries instead of six. Solve both and the streak is yours; miss either one and the day is gone.

How to play Dordle

Type any real five-letter word and press Enter. The word lands on both boards at once and each board colours it independently against its own answer.

The same letter can be green on the left board and grey on the right, because the two answers are unrelated. When you solve one board it freezes and every remaining guess goes to the other word. The keyboard is split down the middle: the left half of each key reports board 1, the right half reports board 2, and once a board is finished the surviving board takes over the whole key.

Game modes

Daily Dordle
One puzzle a day, identical for every player worldwide, resetting at local midnight. This is the mode that carries your streak.
Free play
Unlimited random pairs with nothing at stake. The right place to warm up or to test an opening word.
Sequence
The second board stays hidden until you solve the first, so you cannot hedge across both. Nine guesses instead of seven.
Rescue
You inherit a game that is already three guesses deep and have to finish it from someone else's clues. Four guesses left.
Archive
Every daily Dordle since 24 January 2022 is replayable, generated from the same seed as the day it ran.

Strategy: how to win more Dordles

  1. Open wide, not deep. A vowel-heavy first word such as ADIEU, AUDIO or CRANE tests both answers at once. Your opener is worth twice as much in Dordle as it is in Wordle.
  2. Spend your second guess on fresh letters. Chasing a green from the left board on turn two usually wastes the turn for the right board. RSTLN-heavy words like SHIRT or PLUMB cover a lot of ground.
  3. Finish the board you can see. Once one word is down to two or three candidates, lock it in - a solved board frees every later guess for the other one.
  4. Watch the split keyboard. A key that is grey on one side and untested on the other is still useful information for the live board.
  5. Count your guesses backwards. With seven tries and two words, three guesses per word plus one spare is the budget. If you are on guess five with both boards open, play for information, not for a win.
  6. Mind repeated letters. Words like ABBEY and SPEED are common answers, and a single amber tile does not mean the letter appears only once.

Frequently asked questions

How many guesses do you get in Dordle?

Seven guesses for both words in the standard daily and free modes, and nine in sequence mode. Wordle gives six for one word, so Dordle only adds one extra attempt for a second hidden answer.

Is Dordle harder than Wordle?

Yes. You are solving two independent puzzles with a shared set of guesses, so information that helps one board can be wasted on the other. Most players who solve Wordle in four guesses land Dordle in five or six.

Does the daily Dordle reset at midnight?

The daily puzzle rolls over at midnight in your own timezone, so players in the US, UK and Australia all get the same puzzle number on their own clocks.

Can I play past Dordle puzzles?

Yes. The archive lists every daily since the game launched on 24 January 2022, and each one is regenerated from its original seed, so archive puzzle #500 is the same pair of words it was on the day it ran.

Does Dordle have a hard mode?

Yes, in Settings. Hard mode requires that every revealed hint is reused in later guesses. With two boards, a guess is accepted if it satisfies at least one board that is still unsolved - requiring both at once would often leave no legal English word available.

Is Dordle free?

Dordle is free, needs no account and runs entirely in your browser. Your stats, streak and in-progress game are stored locally on your own device.

What is a good Dordle starting word?

ADIEU, AUDIO, RAISE, CRANE and SLATE all perform well because they cover common vowels and high-frequency consonants. Because a Dordle opener has to work on two answers, vowel coverage matters more here than it does in Wordle.

Dordle and the other -ordle games

Dordle is the two-board step in a family that scales up fast. Wordle is one word in six guesses, Dordle is two words in seven, Quordle is four words in nine, Octordle is eight words in thirteen, and Sedecordle and Duotrigordle go to sixteen and thirty-two. Dordle is the usual second stop: hard enough to make your opening word matter, short enough to finish over a coffee.
